SMASHING
PAINT BUG
Owner - Noel
Mangion
Few
will have failed to notice this Beetle, which looks like it had a high-speed
collision with a bucket of yellow paint.
The
paint spray on this car is far from accidental. It is a very high
quality, piece of work. We understand it took many hours of work
to mask, spray and airbrush the paint splashes and cost more than Lm 800.
Although
Noel Mangion owns the car, he bought the Beetle as a finished project.
Noel is responsible for keeping the car in its fine condition and takes
pleasure in driving it to all our V-Dubs events. The Beetle was purchased
from a man known as Joseph the sprayer, who carried out all the superb
work on this car.
Noel’s
car is a 1972 Beetle, which has been subjected to a few modifications.
It has been de-chromed and fitted with modified rear wings <fenders>
with ‘frenched’ custom tail lights. The engine is a stock 1300cc
twin port that has been cleaned-up and painted in black. Noel plans to
dress-up the engine with some after-market, chromed parts including dynamo
and crank pulleys. The 1300cc is mated to a merged header exhaust system
which exits through a pair of quiet-pack mufflers.
Looking
from the rear, the car appears purple, but looking from the front the car
is yellow. This detail is followed on the alloy wheels. The
front wheels are colour-coded yellow and the rears in purple.
The
interior of this car is also highly detailed. The whole interior
has been re-trimmed in black and has custom door panels with matching yellow
vinyl inserts. The old steering wheel was thrown in the bin and replaced
with a racing wheel, which has a paint-splash mural airbrushed on the centre.
Both the front seats are new high back types.
We
look forward to seeing Noel at the next meeting. Keep polishing your
car and good luck with your engine upgrades.
