Sprint at Hal Far with Team Mini 40 and Peugeot Sports Club
1 May 2000

Following the success of the club's first joint event with Team Mini 40, held on 10 February of this year, the V-Dubs Club once again joined forces with the Mini team and the Peugeot Sports Club to organise another successful event for members to try their cars out at their limits.

Members from all three clubs turned out in their scores to enjoy the event, held in typical spring weather.  Members converged on Hal Far Speedway starting from 8.30.  Shortly after, committee members from all three clubs briefed members and the event itself got under way about an hour later.

Although it was originally planned to have a practice lap plus two timed laps, the number of cars registered for the event necessitated a slight change in plans.  After the practice run was over, the organisers realised there would be insufficient time for another two runs.  So it was decided that each car would get a three lap run instead of the planned two timed laps.  This unfortunate delay in proceedings
ensured that some members did not get a chance to complete their runs because they had planned on a half day outing.  Nonetheless, the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all those who turned up.

During practice, Evan Abela Scolaro's VW 1303 registered the best time in the air-cooled class but, being one of the members who had to leave early, had to hand over the first place honours to Edmund Penza's 1600 Buggy.  Victor Vella was runner up in his 1961 Bug, powered by a 1700cc Type 4 engine.  Victor's efforts to fit the engine into the Beetle's smaller engine bay paid dividends, even though he still had to fine tune the fittings.

Colin Micallef drove his red Golf 4 1400cc to first place in the Water Cooled Class for cars up to 1400cc, followed by Gabriel Micallef in his white Polo 4.  Arthur Naudi Manche, driving an 1800cc Golf 2 instead of his usual 1600cc Diesel Turbo, registered the best VW time of the day whilst newcomer Marvic Spiteri drove his 1600cc Polo Classic to second place.

Last but not least was the Ladies category.  Due to an unfortunate incident earlier in the day, the entry list decreased from three to two drivers.  The honours were carried away by Sylvana Naudi Manche, driving the same Golf 2 1800cc as her better half whilst Josette Micallef understandably achieved second place, driving a VW 1303, undoubtedly handicapped by the performance advantage enjoyed by Sylvana.  The complete results are reproduced below.

Arthur Naudi Manche's best time of the day was only bettered by three cars, namely two Honda Civics in the guest class and Joe Anastasi's 'standard' Mini Cooper 1300cc.  Another interesting fact that some of our members noted was the hefty participation fee Mini and Peugeot owners had to pay whereas V-Dubs owners paid nothing.  These members rightly commented that it pays to own a VW, in every way.  Trophies were eventually distributed to the winners at a social evening held at the La Perla Pizzeria.
